htaccess tool or good tutorial?

I'd like to secure my dadabik and it seems lke htaccess is the best way to go, since it protects all subdirectories and uploaded files (I think).

Can anyone recommend a good htaccess tool or tutorial so I can write my own? Any suggestions or common mistakes I should avoid?
